Think of this book as being organized into 3 sections (recipes / plans, photo galleries, and biographies of successful builders.) The recipes / plans section is certainly extremely useful (5 stars); I just wish there was more content. The photo galleries provide a lot of creative hints if you study them very carefully, so let's call that part 3.5 stars. The "biographies of successful builders" section is kind of interesting, but really does not belong in a book subtitled "The Ultimate DIY Guide for Makers and Players..." Unfortunately, most of the text is "biographies of successful builders." I could have saved myself some time and money by buying this book and carefully studying it before starting my first build, so I would recommend the book to beginners. Still, more technical building information and less "Jimmy was born in North Carolina" would make for a better DIY book. The really important technical details are missing. For example, the author notes that Piezo pickups (where most of us start) are prone to feedback, but makes minimal efforts to explain why, or what to do about it - that seems like a significant oversight. As far as information for "players," there is virtually zero advice. Buy it as a reference, but realize it is just a place to start.
I got this for my husband for Christmas since he is beginning to make cigar box guitars, or diddley bows as he calls them. The book was very informative and gives clear instructions and tips on making the guitars. He says that he has already learned a lot on technique from the book.
OhMyGawd! This is an awesomely inspiring and cool book! The only thing I'd change is to go back in time, and find out about it years ago!
Really good book on CBG building. Includes interviews with builders, and interesting info on the history of CBG. The three building examples the author gives are, while fine, are a little more technical than what is required of a first time builder. I'd advise you to check out YouTube first & check the how-to videos; it is really quite easy, it is just a 1x2 in (or on) a cigar box, with strings.
This is the best book I have seen on cigar box guitars. There are a few other very good books, but this is the best. I really enjoyed reading the player profiles and found several to be very inspirational. I have been building CBG's for about a year and I take every opportunity to learn a little more about the history and maybe pickup a few tips here and there. This book is perfect for both. Very informative and awesome photography. Nice work David, appreciate your hard work!
This book has tons of high quality photos that will give you dozens of ideas. The step-by-step is only so-so but good enough to get you through a build. There are some details left out that you have to figure out yourself. I like the artist profiles. Overall this is an excellent book. Highly recommended for the photos alone.
This is a very cool book. I never really had the urge to build cigar box guitars. I thought because I build acoustics and electrics that this subject was below me. But I was wrong. This book has really influenced me to build one. This book is full of awesome instruments and the details you need to make one. A+
